Week 2: Carve a Wooden Puppet.

Carve a Wooden Puppet.

Week 2: 2nd to 7th August 2020.
Tutor: John Roberts.   At: Dartington, Devon.

Aim:
For you to learn to make a carved wooden puppet of any type: rod, glove or marionette.
The days will be as intensive or as relaxed as you choose to make them….. there will be beginners and experienced makers… but by keeping the numbers down to 7 at most, individual needs will be catered for. Each person’s level of skill, aim and speed-of-working can be accommodated. You could aim to make a complete puppet … which is a lot to do within the week… or you can work at a more leisurely pace. You should at least go away with all the bits and knowledge to complete a truly unique and beautiful puppet.

Extra week: If you want to guarantee to have a completed puppet, fully painted and costumed, think about booking on an extra week. There is a £50 reduction in the fee for the second week. A great extra week to come on is Week 3… as it ends in a performance.

Aspects that will be covered:
Design of a puppet; Safe handling of tools; Working with wood; Sharpening chisels; Construction and jointing techniques that produce a puppet that really works!

The methods used are versatile, fast and require minimum tools and equipment…… you can use this method without the need for a bench, vice or electrical tools, using only a sturdy table and some hand tools. It is a combination of Chinese and European puppet techniques. i.e. Freehand carving using very fine chisels is done in China with no pre-design or cutting out of the wood. John has combined this very fast method with the more considered way of carving used throughout Europe – designing a puppet first on paper…. transferring this to the wood …. using a saw to cut accurate profiles before carving begins.
Stools are provided, but much of the work is done standing at a workbench.

For adults: not for anyone under 18 years old.

Provided:
All tools, wood and other odds and ends will be supplied. Some specialist tools will be available for sale at the end of the week.
Tea, coffee and juice will be provided.

Timetable:
First day: Sunday: Start at 1pm. End 6pm.
Monday: 9.30am to 5.30pm.
Tuesday: 9.30am to 5.30pm. Evening session for those who want to work on till 8pm.
Wednesday: 9.30am to 5.30pm.
Thursday: 9.30am to 5.30pm. Evening session for those who want to work on till 7pm…Then maybe get a takeaway meal.

Where?
The Old Chicken Shed, Craft Education, Dartington Hall Estate, TQ9 6EA.
Car parking is right next to the workshop.
The workshop is a simple room, which will look a lot more interesting once I have brought in lots and lots of tools and puppets.
We also have use of an open-sided cob barn as an outdoor covered area with tables.
The facilities are simple, a bit rustic/rough, but perfect for working with wood.
There is a toilet, kitchen sink and a small fridge.
The workshop is at the end of a quiet road on the edge of a forest that has wonderful walks/trails as part of the beautiful Dartington Hall Estate. Great for dogs, walkers and bikes.
