Shadow puppetry is the most magical of all the different types of puppetry: it is brilliant at conjuring a mood, making transformations, changing from small scale to large. Shadow puppets can be very easy and fast to make, needing not much more than a pair of scissors and some paper, or they can be complex creations taking weeks of careful skilled work. Shadow theatre can be very, very simple to show, needing just a torch and ones hands, or  high-tec using specialist lights, computers and a large crew of performers.

Aim of workshop
Make shadow puppets and experiment with performing your puppets.

Method.
I will introduce this rich form of puppet theatre, showing examples of traditional and modern shadow puppets from around the world.
Different making, operating, lighting and staging methods will be shown.
You will work to make your own puppets, and devise a little performance.
On the last day you will perform your shadow theatre (either on your own or with other people helping) and a video of this little performance will be made for you to have!

There will be the chance to work in groups if you like, or you can be a sole maker/performer.
Simple hand tools will be used like craft knives, cutting mats, pliers, glue guns, paint brushes, etc.
You can work out what you want to do advance, or just come along ……!
The days will be as intensive or relaxed as you choose….. there will be beginners and experienced makers… but by keeping the numbers down – individual needs will be catered for. Each person’s level of skill, aim and speed-of-working can be accommodated.

Please bring along:

  • work clothes
  • food for your lunch
  • ideas for a story or performance: maybe an existing story or music, or just ideas.
  • some favourite music to integrate into a performance.

Aspects that will be covered:
Design of puppets.
Making in different materials: paper, card, leather, plastics.
Methods of jointing and controlling the puppets.
Lighting: this is a key aspect of shadow theatre. A variety of light sources will be demonstrated and experimented with: candle, torch, theatre lights, projectors, overhead projectors.
The screen: another specialist element that can have a major effect on the look of the puppets:  paper, fabric, plastic will be explored.
